Beethoven     Piano Trio in D  - 'Ghost'

Judith Weir   Piano Quartet (2000)

Dvořák           Piano Quartet no 2 in E flat

Beethoven's 250th anniversary spurs us to explore some of his greatest chamber works, as well as some rarities.  The 'Ghost' Trio is firmly in the former camp, and is so named because of its mysterious, shimmering slow movement.  Judith Weir, now Master of the Queen's Music, wrote her piano quartet for the Schubert Ensemble, who have performed for us seven times.  The second of Dvořák's two piano quartets is one of the firm favourites of the repertoire.

The Leonore Trio was formed by members of the versatile Ensemble 360, which performed for us in 2012, and they are joined by Rachel Roberts, a soloist and chamber musician whose recordings include two CDs of viola sonatas with Lars Vogt.

'There was another stand-out moment………the ecstatic Goddess (2009), by the composer-in-residence Edward Gregson. It was fabulously played by the solo violist Rachel Roberts........'  The Times, 2017.

'Leonore Trio do much to persuade us to listen anew to Arensky......playing with sumptuous breadth and beguiling warmth in the first trio, and with appropriate seriousness of intent in the altogether graver second. Revelatory playing.'   The Observer, 2014, of the Trio's debut recording.
